The Louvre, France's iconic museum, is undergoing a major transformation, with a team of international architects selected to oversee the overhaul. This project, dubbed the 'Louvre-New Renaissance', aims to enhance the museum's existing space and create a new, independent area for the Mona Lisa, attracting around 20,000 visitors daily. The overhaul will also include a new museum entrance on the eastern facade, addressing congestion issues at the current glass-and-metal pyramid entry point, which was designed for only four million visitors annually.
The selected architects, STUDIOS Architecture Paris and Selldorf Architects, bring a wealth of experience to the project. STUDIOS Architecture Paris has contributed to the design of the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris and the LUMA Foundation in Arles, while Selldorf Architects is known for its work on the historic mansion housing the Frick Collection in New York and the National Gallery in London. The team also includes a French landscape and urban planning agency, ensuring a holistic approach to the redevelopment.
The Louvre's transformation comes at a significant cost, with estimates ranging from €700 million to €800 million, although the French Court of Auditors suggests a higher price tag of €1.15 billion. This ambitious project aims to address the museum's challenges, including security concerns, following a high-profile jewellery heist and a series of scandals, including strikes, ticket fraud, and maintenance issues.
